In June 2025, Chapter Vice President Reed Whipple passed away after a courageous battle with aggressive gastrointestinal cancer.

What Reed brought in his professional discipline sent waves of influence through Nevada workplaces. What he brought in his friendship brightened the lives of innumerable colleagues.
To honor Reed’s insatiable curiosity and his steadfast commitment to growing our profession, the Chapter Board approved the renaming of our Reed Whipple Professional Development Fund.
May we each seek to honor Reed’s memory in the way we love those around us and seek to always improve workplace safety.
Below, you’ll find important details on the administration of this fund:
- Eligibility – only Southern Nevada ASSP members with at least one (1) year of membership can apply. Award recipients must agree to be publicly recognized in Chapter communications to remain eligible.
- Application Judging – the Finance Committee will be tasked to review the applications and grade them using a standard scoring rubric. After Finance Committee review has concluded, award recommendations will be brought to the Chapter Board for approval voting. Any active Southern Nevada Chapter member may join the Finance Committee to assist in judging. Finance Committee members will recuse themselves from judging their own application.
- Award Amounts – the fund will award amounts requested up to $250, subject to the availability of funds. The committee will have the discretion to grant several smaller awards or a single (or a few) larger awards, based upon the applications received. Awards amounts may be influenced by the type of membership, such as full-paying or student membership.
- Award Criteria – the intent of the award is to assist Chapter members in covering certain expenses related to relevant professional development within the scope of the ASSP and/or BCSP, such as certification testing fee, study prep materials, webinar or conference attendance, etc. Only funds towards the cost of entry or attending, not the logistics (food, lodging, travel) shall be awarded. Preference may be given to individuals that pay for ASSP membership and/or education out-of-pocket and not through employer sponsorship/expense.
- Tracking – the Chapter Treasurer will maintain a separate accounting of all fund transactions and the educational fund account. The accounting records will be made available to all Chapter and Board members, upon request. Award recipients will agree to be publicly recognized in Chapter communications for eligibility.
