SUMMARY:SoNV October Chapter Meeting - Stoic Strength for the Safety Profession
DESCRIPTION:What Causes Failure Among Safety Professionals\, When it's not a Technical Matter?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFailure happens\, even among safety professionals. What causes this?\n\nIs it a lack of technical understanding? Or\, is it a collapse under pressures beyond their control? The ancient philosophy of Stoicism offers a framework for thriving among these pressures. You may think of stoicism as a cold\, uncaring worldview\, standing at odds with our noble work.\n\nA closer look at Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations\, the source material for Stoicism\, reveals a foundation of interconnectedness\, duty\, empathy\, and personal growth. Compassionate Stoicism stands ready to re-energize your professional practice\, affirm the value of your life-saving work\, and provide you with tools for thriving instead of crumbling among the pressures of protecting people\, property\, and the environment.\n\n\nWe'll hear a unique perspective from members of our Southern Nevada chapter\, and the Sacramento chapter.\n\n\n\n\nRussell Duren and Casey Marsh will address the external pressures safety professionals must navigate\, and propose a map for applying Stoic philosophy to not only professionally succeed\, but to enjoy a life well lived.\n\nAfter attending this meeting\, you'll be able to:\n\n Describe the context of early writings on Stoi\ncism\, in support of its importance as a timeless source of encouragement and empowerment for safety professionals.\n Identify core principles of Stoic Compassion that support a robust safety practice.\n Assess external pressures of the safety profession and apply appropriate Stoic controls and resources to maintain resilience\, and in fact thrive\, among those pressures.\n\nJoin us for this virtual meeting to for an emerging perspective on wellness for the safety pro!\n\n\n\nCasey Marsh is the EH&amp\;S Director for Waste Management’s Northern California and Nevada market area\, bringing over a decade of experience in high hazard industries. As a Certified Safety Professional\, Casey emphasizes employee safety and regulatory compliance\, while fostering a culture of trust\, care\, and continuous improvement. Casey’s leadership is defined by a passion for empowering people and driving safety excellence across the organization.\n\n\n\nRussell Duren is the EHS Manager for Nikkiso Cryo\, Inc.\, the Las Vegas facility of Nikkiso Clean Energy &amp\; Industrial Gases. Supporting a PSM facility that also maintains ISO certifications in Quality\, Environmental\, and Health &amp\; Safety Management\, Russell consistently seeks to balance the pressures of external forces with earning the trust of the humans where the work happens. Russell has presented extensively within ASSP on Work At Height\, at Chapter meetings and Society &amp\; Regional PDCs\, as well as at virtual symposia of the International Society for Fall Protection. Most recently\, Russell completed a term as an Area Director in ASSP Region II\, and celebrated recognition as the Region II Safety Professional of the Year.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nThis meeting is approved for 0.1 CEUs.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVirtual Meeting Info:\nAs with most of our technical meetings\, this meeting will be online-only.
